Sydney Spotters Weekend

Back in the mid 2000's the Sydney Airport Message Board started a rather informal gathering known as The Sydney Spotters Weekend.

A simple gathering of like minded aviation photography enthusiasts to talk shop.

Afternoons spent at the famous Beach in Sydney photographing the departing heavies in the afternoon coupled with mass consumption of alcoholic beverages at night.

Come forward a decade and what a transformation the event has taken.

The Sydney Airport Message Board has teamed up with Sydney Airport Corporation Limited (SACL) to deliver a sensational event.

Starting Friday afternoon SACL put on the first airside tour unfortunately the weather wasn't the best but none the less people came for the opportunity to go airside and get up and close to the action. SACL opened up their office as the hosting venue. Commanding views of the airport and Botany Bay sure made for a very attractive location. The plan was to originally host the event on the rooftop but unfortunately due to weather this was not to be the case. None the less the office space underneath did not disappoint.

Canon Australia were invited to the event and bought an impressive display of kit. Canon 1DX's, Canon 5dmk3's, Canon 200-400 1.4X, Canon 600mm, Canon 500mm prime were the highlights. Insert your CF card and they were all yours. A real chance to use some of the best photographic equipment in the world for free. The experience Canon provided was seamless and solidified my position as to why I chose to use a Canon camera.

Some light beverages and dinner were provided. The food was absolute quality, thank you SACL.

After this we launched into some lucky door prizes and trivia.

The trivia questions blew me away. A real assortment of questions to separate the true aviation gurus from the up and comers.

The prizes on offer astounded me - tours of Terminal operations Centre, tours of Sydney Airport Control Tower, books from reknowned aviation photographers and authors.

Some seriously cool prizes on offer.

The next days proceeding's was the highlight. The exclusive airside tour for members of the Sydney Airport Message Board. Meeting time was 0600 at Sydney Airport Media Centre. Safety vests and visitor identification cards were handed out to members. We then proceeded through security to board the bus.

Luckily we were escorted by a long time member of the Sydney Airport Message Board and who works as a safety officer at Sydney Airport - Nigel C.

Nigel knew the best locations for photos and we made our way to a spot about 3/4 of the way up Runway 16L.

We then proceeded to move further down the airfield to just north of runway 25. What a spot to pitch up for the morning.

Three people who really pulled out all stops to get this weekend across the line were Kurt Ams from the Sydney Airport Message Board, Anne Walker and Nigel C from SACL.

Thank you!

From the crew at PlaneImages.net and I know I speak for everyone who attended the events we thank you very much for organising such a fantastic event.

What a huge success and we look forward to the next one.
