Gold Coast Airport - Airside Adventures

I'm lucky enough to have some friends in the right jobs at the right places.

Their jobs give me access to photograph from the other side of the fence. A few many are afforded the opportunity to do.

It's early morning and I'm on my way to the Gold Coast airport in South East Queensland. I'm joined by fellow Plane Images contributor Lance Broad for this mornings photography session.

Jetstar's new daily 787-8 Dreamliner service from Tokyo is delayed but that suits us just fine. The sun will be up and the temperature is still nice and cool.

We took a trip up to the tower and the controllers couldn't have been more welcoming. They took the time out of their morning to explain the operations at the airport and the perks of the job.

In case you don't know Coolangatta's main movements are the 3 international heavy departures - 1 x Scoot B777-200ER, 1 x Air Asia X A330-300 and 1 x Jetstar B787-8 Dreamliner. That's what makes Cooly (this is what it is known to the locals as) so special. Today's Scoot and Air Asia movements were delayed. Scoot was arriving just as Air Asia taxiing out for departure. Conviently after Scoot's arrival a Runway Inspection was required and Air Asia X was required to line up and wait while we performed a runway inspection. We exited the runway and pulled off to the side just in time to get Air Asia X departing.

Here are a select few photos from the morning's efforts.
